Calculating the next London–New York overlap…

Why sessions matter for gold

Gold trades nearly around the clock, but it does not move the same way at all hours. As the trading day rolls from Sydney to Tokyo to London to New York, liquidity and volatility rise and fall. Trading during the busy, liquid sessions means tighter spreads and cleaner, more directional moves; trading the quiet hours means wider spreads and choppy, unpredictable price action. Knowing which session is live — in your timezone — is one of the simplest edges a gold trader can have.

The four sessions at a glance

These are standard-time approximations; actual times shift by an hour when regions observe daylight saving. The live clock above always reflects the current conversion to your device's timezone.

The golden window: London–New York overlap

The single best time to trade gold is the overlap of the London and New York sessions — roughly 13:00–17:00 GMT. For those few hours, both of the world's largest financial centres are active at once. Liquidity is deepest, spreads are tightest, and price moves are at their most directional. In fact, gold's daily high or low is established during this window a large share of the time. If you can only trade for a couple of hours a day, make it this one. The countdown above tells you exactly when it starts in your local time.

Trading the quieter hours

This does not mean the Asian session is useless. Range-bound Asian hours are perfect for preparation: mark the session high and low, identify key levels, and plan the breakout trade for the London open. Just be realistic — fewer high-probability setups appear in thin liquidity, and forcing trades in dead conditions is a common way to bleed an account through spreads. Our signal dashboard factors session liquidity into every signal, which is why you will often see HOLD during the quiet hours.

Don't forget the news calendar

Session timing tells you when gold is liquid; the economic calendar tells you when it might explode. High-impact US releases — CPI, NFP, and FOMC — land during the New York session and can override normal session behaviour entirely. Always check the gold economic calendar alongside this clock, and read our full best times to trade gold guide for the complete picture.
